Breathe Healthy : DIY Homemade Baby Vapour Rub

Worried about your little one’s cough, cold and wheezing during the changing seasons?

Jaishree Chauhan shares her own ‘Baby Rub’ recipe to help bring tremendous comfort to toddlers and the little ones.

Baby Rub

For babies (6 months plus)
  • Mix 1 ounce of jojoba oil with 4 drops of cedar wood, 4 drops of elemi, 4 drops of lemon oil and 4 drops of lavender oil.
  • Store this in a dark glass bottle
  • Rub it on the chest, soles of the feet and back at night.

Note : Essential oils should never be used undiluted, you need a carrier base and with smaller babies the rule is to dilute dilute dilute.

For babies (6 months plus)

Everything that you need:

  • 1/2 cup olive oil, coconut oil, or almond oil or jojoba oil
  • 2 tablespoons of beeswax pastilles
  • 20 drops of Eucalyptus Oil (use only 4 drops for use on babies and young children)
  • 20 drops Peppermint Oil (substitute 4 drops fir essential oil for use on babies and small children)
  • 10 drops Rosemary Oil (omit for use on babies and small children)
  • 10 drops cinnamon or clove oil (optional- omit for use on babies or small children

Making the Vapour Rub:

  • Melt beeswax with oil of choice in a double boiler until just melted.
  • Add the essential oils (use half the amount for a baby version or dilute with coconut oil before using)
  • Stir until well mixed and pour into a glass container which is dark.
  • Use as needed to help reduce coughing and congestion.

Incase you need to make a carrier base – whip up some shea butter with coconut oil. If you can’t,  just add the essential oils to organic coconut or jojoba oil.

All essential oils have their own qualities. Eucalyptus is antimicrobial while lavender soothes them to sleep, lemon is a wonder oil- slows coughing and wheezing. However, it is important that you dilute the oil well before use and do not let the baby ingest any or apply it close to their mouth.
