Here’s Everything You Witnessed in 2016!

The year 2016 has been nothing short of thrilling. It was packed with all the ingredients that thrillers are made of. The last couple of months’, have ensured the year end does in no way get boring for anyone! The best way perhaps, to sum up 2016 would be:

“Dear Citizens of the Globe,

In keeping with that sentiment, here’s a list of 25 things that happened in 2016. We can all decide for ourselves, whether this year was good, bad, ugly, amazing or just all out weird!!

Bollywood gave us some good movies.

We saw some great movies by Bollywood making their way to the big screen this year. They made you think and left an impact. Dangal, Neerja, Airlift, Pink, Sultan, Kapoor and Sons, M.S, Dhoni and Dear Zindagi. Atleast one if not more of these movies, topped the list of movies we enjoyed this year!

Though it was the Chinese year of the Monkey, 2016 was good to Tigers!

The global tiger population has increased in 2016. According to a recent tally from the World Wildlife Fund, there are now 3,890 tigers in the world, up from about 3,200 in 2010. So if you haven’t already been on a safari to see this magnificent big cat, no better time than now. Your chances of spotting one have increased!

The world record for maximum trees planted in 24hrs was broken!

India planted 50 million trees in just one day, smashing the world record! For once we’ve made a world record with the highest numbers, that didn’t revolve around population! Around 800000 volunteers worked for 24 hours to plant these tresses and fulfil the commitment India made at the Paris Climate Conference in 2015.

On September 4, 2016 Mother Teresa was declared a saint by Pope Francis at a canonization ceremony held in the Vatican City. The canonization came on the eve of her 19th death anniversary. From now on, she will be known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

Reliance did the ultimate “Jee lay apni Zindagi” to all Indians with the launch of Reliance Jio

We saw the launch of Reliance JIO. While all of us are skeptical about the dream for a digital India being achieved, and how Jio will usher in the digital era for India, It appears promising, especially since the deadline for free usage just got extended till March 31, 2017.

Apple’s biggest rival faced an off season

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 took up prime real estate in headlines across the globe when the device gained more publicity because of over-heating and catching fire rather than its more ergonomic design and enhanced stylus.

Kakuna, Pikachu, Raichu were not sushi rolls that went viral in 2016, but little Japanese creatures that you could find in the most random places!

How can the year in review be complete without the slightest mention to the biggest gaming addiction ever in the history of games-Pokemon Go? Pokémon hunting geeks made international headlines when they were lured into forests catching Pokémon or unknowingly crossing over into foreign territory in search for Pokémons’! This game definitely left a mark on 2016!

#Delhipollution #Smog #Dehichokes was what Diwali did to the national capital this year

Delhi became the most polluted city in the world, to the point that pollution levels are dangerously high! With Arvind Kejriwal (our oh-so-competent) chief minister starting the year with an insanely flawed odd-even scheme, little difference has been made.

Our women athletes did us proud in Rio

PV Sindhu helped India save face at the 2016 Rio Olympics by bagging a silver medal and redeeming the largest ever Indian Olympic contingent.

Extended Maternity Leaves – Wowie for all new moms!
The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which increased maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks, was passed by the Rajya Sabha in August this year. Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, highlighting that there are more nuclear families now, said the Bill has its roots in malnutrition, as breastfeeding the child is recommended which is not possible unless the mother is in physical proximity of the child.

Till death do us part..or maybe sometime before that!

This year also saw the end of the marriages of some celebrities we’ve all loved for a long long time. Whether it was Farhan and Adhuna Akhtar or the more recent Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora split. We’ve all felt a little heart-broken hearing about these couple going their separate ways! A little less recent but equally talked about if not more was the “Brangelina” split between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. We know Jeniffer Aniston’s had a good year!

The Rajnikant of Indian Media suddenly quit and the nation wants to know why..

In the list of things that happened in 2016, it’s impossible to leave out the most hated, loved, despised and watched person in the India Media. Arnab Goswami, left all clueless when he just up and left Times Now. Well Arnab, the nation wants to know what happened and when will you be back with your own channel?

Piggy Chops or PC as she’s now called made her way to Hollywood and how!

Former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra after conquering Indian cinema and crossed the Atlantic to the land of dreams and man has she made a mark for herself in Hollywood. Whether it is in her hit show Quantico that is now in its second season or in her bad girl role in the upcoming movie Baywatch, she has got everyone talking about her and definitely made us proud!

The Indian Army proved that you don’t have to be a rap artist to be a smooth operator with some real swag!!

Roughly 10 days after the Uri attack that claimed the lives of18 jawans of the Indian Armed Forces, India carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, inflicting heavy casualties on terrorists and ‘those protecting them” and indicating a change of stand on the rules of engagement on the disputed line of control. For the first time in years, Indians came together to acknowledge the sacrifices our army men and women make, just to keep us safe!

Team India wasn’t far behind in putting Pakistan in their place, or well taking theirs..

The Indian Cricket team uncrowned Pakistan to receive the rank of No. 1 Test Team. What better way to end the year!

“Lets go to the Mumbai” was the Hymn for the Weekend in November

If you still believe Red Bull gives you wings, you clearly missed hearing about the UDAN scheme

UDAN or ‘Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik’, is the government’s regional air connectivity scheme under which all air fares will be capped at INR 25000/- for flights with a duration of 1 hour or less. The scheme aims at connecting unserved and under-served airports to boost air connectivity in the country. There are currently 394 unserved and 16 underserved airports in the country.

Families fled violence and sought asylum in other countries

Syria’s civil war created the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. More than 11 million people have been killed or forced to flee their homes. The United Nations identified 13.5 million Syrians requiring humanitarian assistance, of which more than 6 million are internally displaced within Syria, and over 4.8 million are refugees outside of Syria. Turkey has been the largest host country with over 2.7 million Syrian refugees.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

The goods and Services Tax, the one hundred and twenty second amendment bill of the Indian Constitution, is due to take effect from April 1, 2017. Positioned as the biggest reform in India’s Indirect Tax, the GST will combine all central and state level taxes and levies on all goods and services get be integrated into two components: a central GST and a state GST. The proposed upside of GST is that there will be a continuous mechanism of tax credits, when value is added at every stage from a manufacturer to seller. The end consumer will also benefit by having to bear only one GST charge.

“An Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman went to a bar. They all had to leave because the Englishman wanted to go”. This was just one among the many jokes that trolled twitter when England voted to exit the European Union-Britain’s Exit or Brexit as it came to be more commonly known. While the details of the exit are still being formalized everyone is waiting to see how this decision takes effect in the future months. After the Brexit decision, many felt the only thing that could be worse than this, would be if Trump won the US elections- which brings us to our next shocker of 2016!

Donald Trump is elected the next president of the United States of Stupid!

Words cannot do justice to the moment when trump won elections and was elected the next president of USA. President elect Donald Trump will be sworn in on January 20, 2017.

Narendra Modi blitzkrieg-ed all the black money hoarding Indians in one slick move

November 8, 2016, 8:00 pm, will be a day that will be remembered in history for decades to come. Whether we agree or not, in one swift move, our prime minister not only stole the thunder of the much awaited American elections result, but also ensure that millions of Indians, with millions of ‘notes’ were left speechless! Effective midnight of November 8, the 500 and 1000 rupee notes were demonetized and a new 500 and 2000 rupee note was issued. With opinions about demonetization as divided as the north and south pole, we’re all patiently waiting to see how this decision pans out.

Amma passed away on December 5, 2016

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister- Jayalalithaa who had been hospitalized for a lung infection since September 22, 2016 died of a cardiac arrest on December 5, 2016 in a hospital in Chennai. Amma was one of the most loved politicians and leaves behind a void in Tamil Nadu among her voters and the AIADMK party. She inspired a cult following and made way for herself as one of India’s most charismatic and enigmatic political leaders. Amma will be remembered as a woman who created a place for herself in a male dominated world, whether in acting or politics.

Chennai was hit by Cyclone Vardah

The cyclone hit the coast of Chennai and Andhra Pradesh and left the city paralyzed. The hurricane-strength storm triggered by cyclone Vardah resulted in severe damage to buildings and properties, uprooted trees, and electric poles that caused breakdown of power for hours in the city. Nearly 20,000 people were evacuated from low areas and 10 people died. The navy, army and air force were ready and geared up to assist in evacuation and rescue, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) that deployed 16 teams.

And then there was still more…

Netflix came to India, along with the Jeep Brand, the Ford Mustang and the MY 2016 Jaguar XJ launch. #MakeInIndia was the most hashtagged word this year, Mumbai’s Marine Drive most Instagrammed location in India this year, ‘Starboy’ by The Weekend was the most searched song in the history of music, Taimur Ali Khan was the most discussed baby name and Sunny Leoni was still the most searched person (I wonder why?). Delhi experienced the lowest crime rate in 2016, as compared to any year in the past decade. There couldn’t be a better way to bring in the new-year than feeling safe and watching Netflix!

Whether we tried unplugging 2016, waiting 20 seconds and plugging it back in again like we do when most things seem to go out of control, makes little to no difference.

We bid adieu to 2016 and gear up for all the troubleshooting that lies ahead for 2017!
