Holi Story

Once upon a time, there was a demon king by the name of Hiranyakashyap who won over the kingdom of earth. He was a very egoistic and arrogant king and considered himself the most powerful one in the world. He wanted and ordered everyone to worship ONLY him.

But to his great disappointment, his son, Prahlad became a true devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father.

This made Hiranyakashyap very angry and he tried several ways to kill his son Prahlad but Lord Vishnu saved him every time. He made Prahlad jump in a well, and Prahlad was unharmed. He tried to poison Prahlad, the poison turned to nectar in Prahlad’s mouth. Then, Hiranyakashya ordered that wild elephants should trample Prahlad, but he was not hurt. He also put Prahlad in a room with poisonous, angry snakes, but still nothing happened to him.

Finally, after many failed attempts of trying to kill his son, Hiranyakashyap asked his sister, Holika to get rid of Prahlad. He asked his sister, Holika to enter a bonfire with Prahlad in her lap. For, Hiranyakashyap knew that Holika had a boon, that she could not be burnt by flame.

Prahlad, who kept chanting the name of Lord Vishnu all this while, came out unharmed despite being set on fire, as the lord blessed him for his extreme devotion. Later,Lord Vishnu appeared as half-man, half-lion and killed Hiranyakashyap at dusk, on his porch steps.

Thus, Holi derives its name from Holika. and, is celebrated as a festival of victory of good over evil.

Here’s wishing you and your loved ones a safe and A Happy Holi!
